The National Board of Institutional Care
The National Board of Institutional Care (known in Sweden as Statens institutionsstyrelse or SiS), is a government authority which runs individually tailored compulsory care for young people and for adults with substance abuse problems.
SiS provides care and treatment where voluntary action has not been sufficient and where compulsion has therefore become necessary. The County Administrative Court decides whether to implement compulsory care in response to an application from social services.
SiS institutions dedicated to the care of young people receive young people demonstrating psycho-social problems, substance abuse and criminal behaviour. These young people receive care under the terms of the Care of Young Persons (Special Provisions) Act (LVU).
Some of the young people’s institutions care for young people who have committed serious crimes and who have been sentenced to secure institutional treatment under the Secure Institutional Treatment Act (LSU).
The clients in SiS “LVM” institutions have serious abuse problems related to alcohol, narcotics, pharmaceuticals or a mixture of these. They receive care in accordance with the Care of Drug and Alcohol abusers Act, known by the Swedish acronym LVM.
SiS LVM institutions and youth institutions are the only treatment institutions with the authority to forcibly detain persons who have been taken into compulsory care.
We employ treatment methods backed by research. Our activities are highly ethical and have a high level of legal diligence.
SiS is supervised by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).
